TEACHING THE PUPPIES TO EAT A MASH AND LAP WATER
PUPPIES LEARNING TO EAT
Feeding 10 puppies can be quite the challange.
In the above photo, the puppies are learning how
to eat. Mother starts to pull away from them slowly about 3 to 4 weeks old. The puppies need to learn how to "Lap" food and water. We monitor the puppies, to make sure they continue to gain weight and drink water.
Here the puppies are eating a baby rice mash made up of goats milk, ground up Royal Canine Puppy food, and Nupro Vitamins. We feed this as many times a day as they cry and are hungry.
There is always a fresh bowl of water in their pen. Clean newspapers for their waste, and by this time, they are attached to a weaning pen also.
The puppies will eat and sleep on one side, and go into the connected weaning pen on the other side to take care of their personal business. |
THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING A PUPPY FOOD
HOW MUCH TO FEED:
When choosing a food for your dog keep in mind that German Shepherds increase their birth weight by approx. 70 times by 15 months of age. As pups, they tend to double their weight each month.
Your pup will require a puppy food made especially for the needs of a growing large breed puppy and for the special needs of your German Shepherd who have issues with joints and the digestive system. There are many large breed puppy foods on the market today. Find a PREMIUM one you can trust to ensure your dog is getting the proper nutrients it requires.
We feed Royal Canin Puppy to the pups and Royal Canin 24 to the adults. The puppy food comes in 30lb bags and the adult food comes in 33lb bags. The food is a little more expensive than others, but my dogs absorb more nutrition from this food, thus eating much less than many other brands. My dogs do very well on it and have very shiny coats.A small puppy may go through 1 bag in 2 months.

WHEN TO FEED YOUR PUPPY
AND HOW OFTEN
Pups at 8 weeks usually eat 4 feedings per day and gradually go to 3 feedings per day.
We "Free Feed" (food in front of them all day and night) here at our kennel. All the puppies aren't hungry at the same time, so having food available for them in common pratice here.
Your puppy will tell you when he or she is hungry. Usually when they wake, they have to go out and relieve themselves, then they will want to eat. Then relieve themselves again.
Puppies are like babies, they eat, sleep and poop for the most part! You will be raising a baby, so be prepared to take care of them like a baby.
The results you get from bringing up your puppy will be very rewarding as they mature.
Raise and enjoy your puppy as they grow.
