Your Puppies First Bed:

Now that your pup has left the physical closeness and security of snuggling up to a canine family each night--he will be feeling upset and anxious.

If the breeder was knowledgable he/she would have provided you with a blanket that had been left with the mother and pups long enough to become imprinted with their reassuring scent. Use this to form his first dog bed.

Consider at first a secure box or dog crate as a temporary sleeping area (Purchase a crate big enough, your puppy will grow fast) . Line it with a reasonably thick layer of polythene/lino, and cover with several sheets of newspaper. Preferably located in your bedroom. Why your bedroom? Firstly, the nearness, sight, sound and smell of you will be comforting. And secondly, it will speed up the bonding process. (the photo above is a Large crate, if you look closely, you can see Connor in the crate bonding with the puppy).

Dogs need someone to respect, and to be guided by. Someone to quickly replace their mother. Hierarchal relationships are instinctively understood. After all, their direct ancestor is the Grey Wolf.

You need to establish that you are the pack leader. Most things will naturally fall in to place providing you take the role of leader right from the outset of your budding relationship.

If you decide that your bedroom isn't where your puppy is going to sleep long term. You can after about a week or so, make the move away. Another method is to gradually move the box/dog crate nearer to the final location of his permanent bed every day. Your new pal will hardly notice.
