RIDING IN AN AUTOMOBILE

Taking your pet for a ride in your automobile, should be taken seriously. Our pets are members of our family, our furry children. Protection in your vehicle should be the same for them, life is to precious for us not to protect our animals from harm.
There are many ways to travel with your pet safely.
1. When you pick up your puppy, have a family member with you, or a friend to drive you, this way you can sit in the back seat and bond with your puppy on the way home. This way you and your puppy will be traveling safely, with no distractions. Being taken from the litter mates, your puppy will feel lost and abandoned, if you hold him/her, cuddle, lots of rubbing, and talking, you will be bonding from the start.
2. Your puppy may or may not get sick on the way home. You will need to start off with short rides and gradually extend them over a time until the puppy can make it without throwing up. Make sure you always have plenty of water so that the puppy does not get dehydrated. Always carry clean towels and paper towels with you to clean up any mess. You don't want the puppy eating or laying in it. Try to limit the "Drive Time" until the puppy is a little larger and the problem will usually resolve itself. We do take them for rides, but with the change of vehicles, smells and surroundings, your puppy can be nervous and frightened resulting in an upset stomach. Do NOT feed your puppy before a ride in your vehicle until they are comfortable traveling.
3. Get the proper restraining devices. If you are in an accident and your dog is not belted in, then he/she will be thrown around the same way that a person would be if they are not buckled in. Keep your pet safe by placing them in a restraining harness.
a. Introduce your puppy to the harness. Let him/her sniff it and wear it around the house. Because harnesses feel different from leashes, a dog may worry about the harness at first. This will be easier to deal with if the puppy is not also belted in while he is getting used to the strange feeling.
b. Gently settle your dog in the car. Talk soothingly while you buckle the puppy in and give lots of pets and positive vibes to keep the puppy relaxed. This should comfort and reassure your puppy that he/she is safe. The back seat is always the best place for a dog, just like a child. If your car does not have a back seat, you need to be sure to disable the airbag so that it does not hurt your dog in case of an accident.
c. Avoid talking to your dog while driving. If the puppy is agitated, you can speak soothingly, but you must not turn around or give any indication that your attention can be gotten while you are driving. This is for your own safety since you are not as good a driver when you are being distracted.
d. NEVER and I mean NEVER.........let your dog ride on your lap while driving! This makes for a very dangerous situation in any circumstance! Pay attention to the road and drive the vehicle............you can pay attention to the dog once you arrive at your destination.
Using common sense and proper training, you will have a dog that loves to ride with you and will have wonderful travel manners.
